I agree that the patio option is very nice in the summer, but I tend to be unimpressed with their food. The one thing worth coming for is the french fries though, since they are super crispy and likely double-fried.

Probably been here 10 times or so. Atrociously bad service. It just takes forever to get your food or drinks. It seems to have gotten a little better recently, but it's still not up to par. The food is pretty good. I've really only ever had the burgers, fries, and some apps. The burgers are very good and I highly recommend them. The best thing about this place in the opportunity to sit out on the deck on the St. Joe River and enjoy a nice summer evening while having a few drinks. That's what keeps me coming back.

Friendly service. They treat everyone like a regular even though the place was packed for lunch hour. Cheeseburger is cooked perfectly. Next time I will skip the battered fries and try a different side.

Poor service, sub-par food quality, and the food being cold when it was brought to us. Worst of all, everyone in the party got food poisoning. Will definitely never return.

Food is pretty good, lots of topping options for the burgers. I've been here a few times, last night I got the buffalo chicken wrap ($7.95) which was just okay. It was quite large but didn't come with fries or chips or any type of side. My girlfriend got the all you can eat pollock for $10, came with fries. Her food was excellent. I won't get the chicken wrap again, too expensive for a wrap with no side.

They make some delicious burgers! I have yet to leave this place disappointed. Prices are pretty reasonable too! I definitely recommend eating here when you get a chance.

I am newer to this area, and husband and I found it on our own. We loved it-at first, we came back numerous times. He and I went there one day and saw the off shift bartender behind the bar, we thought that was unprofessional, then we ACTUALLY WITNESSED him take a drink out of a hard liquor bottle and put it BACK!! We noticed too, the instigator was a man at the bar-he had an Oaken Bucket shirt on, and we realized it was the owner or the manager!! The bartender was told by the manager/owner to go home and the then pulled out his switchblade!!! (I got that on video). We have not went back, and considering calling the proper authorities.

We have been here at least 5 times in the last year, and we have never left disappointed. We often start with an order of the Irish Nachos. They are cross-cut fries that are cooked until they are a bit crispy and then covered in nacho cheese sauce, scallions, bacon crumbles, and ranch. If you can find one without topping on it, you might be able to eat it with your fingers, but we usually end up eating them with a fork. My husband usually asks for a burger with cheese, bacon, onion rings, and barbeque sauce. He loves that burger and always comments about how good it was. I have gotten anything from a cheeseburger to the soup and salad bar to the fish and chips, and I've never been disappointed. The salad bar is small, but has fresh ingredients and I appreciate being able to build a salad to go with my meal. The soups I have tried so far - ham and bean and beef barley - have both been a bit on the salty side. However, we don't cook with salt at home, so what might seem salty to us might be considered a normal level of salt by others. The staff have always been friendly and attentive. We've only eaten on the deck once and although it was a nice experience, the service we had that night was the slowest, but it was also packed so it was understandable. Everyone flocks to the deck when it's open, so unless you are really insistent on eating outside, stick to the main room. All in all, this isn't gourmet bar food, but it's decent food at a decent price with friendly staff.

the servers were very rude and a girl who works there used her dead uncle as a pawn because she said i was threatening her, how can that happen when u havent seen someone in five months? the server whinned like a baby to the night shift manager told him lies and made a scene. so me and my friend were asked to leave. i didnt even get a chance to order. im never going there again. discrimination charges have been filed

Ok if you like cheap food and sitting on cheap plastic patio chairs -- The burgers are nothing to rave about. Rather lacking in flavor, and mind had no char at all.. The setting is horrible, and our waitress apparently had better things to do than refill drinks because we only saw her twice. Never again.

I rather like the oaken bucket. I was driven here after the fiddlers hearth was tragically closed for a private event, and I must say that I was not disappointed. It was winter so we didn't get to sit outside (I'd definitely come back in the summer to sit on the patio), but I liked the inside space anyway. It felt like being in someone's cabin. Someone's... bar.. cabin. Anyway, the point is that it's cozy. I had a blue moon draft for like 1.75 or something ridiculous. We shared a basket of hot wings and the oriental chicken salad. The salad was actually quite good for bar food, and the wings really hit the spot. Wish they came with celery and blue cheese instead of fries, but I grabbed some dressing at the salad bar and all was well. I think our total between the two of us was 18 dollars or something, including drinks. I'll add this to my rotation of South Bend regulars!

The outside deck area is the best place to be in town. Awesome drink deals and good food make it a great choice for a laid back night out.

Okay, I eat here a lot, mostly because it's walking distance from IUSB's campus. When we want to celebrate a good exam or get a drink after a bad one, this is where we go. Other than its convenient location, I don't have many good things to say about this restaurant. A lot of the food is frozen and dunked in a deep fryer (especially the appetizers) and it's all overpriced. The outdoor seating is nice, but I wish they would allow smoking outside. The only thing really edible is the burgers, but they're hit or miss most of the time. Beer is cheap, but not much selection. One thing I will say--I've never had bad service here. Things might take a while to come out if they are really busy, but my servers have always been pleasant and attentive.

Went here after work for a burger and beer with friends. The patio overlooking the river is great. The service was average, not great, but not bad. The burger was really good, and the beer was really cheap. Great place to go to hang out with friends. I would not recommend it for those seeking healthy choices, though.

  • Danielle G.

I've been coming here for a few years. I enjoy the patio and the great river views. Their food is decent and drinks are too crazy price-wise. Depending on the waitstaff will depend on the service you get. I've had great service and I've had lame service while eating here. Parking lot is pain...hopefully someday that cane be resolved. Its worth a stop for your average burger/sandwich place. Salad bar could use some attention. Its pretty generic imo.

  • Mike K.

Another trip, another disappointment. I had to stand on a chair and yell at 2 waitresses to get a drink. Then waited 15 minutes for one to take my order. Not the first bad experience. Certainly will be my last.

Miles' Lab was closed on Sunday, so we tried to find another good local burger. Start with the positives - great location. Riverfront deck, nice shade, cool breeze, beautiful sunny day. With regards to the food - flavorless burger glopped with velveeta like topping.

Great burgers and cheap beer. Also have great chicken wraps and Irish Nacho Fries are awesome.

    (5)
  • Mose O.

Awful parking. Awful service. Uncomfortable seating. Awful awful service. Given the location on the river and the cheap beer they have the chance to be awesome, but they clearly have no desire to be. It is usually after my 3rd beer special pitcher that I resolve to never go there again.

I enjoyed this place as a great summer patio option- they have proven to be few and far between in South Bend. Good food, (though few healthy options, I enjoyed the salads and the buffallo wraps when visiting a few times) friendly service. The inside of the restaurant seems to be poorly lit- but I have only dined outside. All in all: great place to grab beers with friends in the summer, sit and enjoy being outside (and even on the water), and have a yummy bite to eat.

Great food. Great serves. Like the view of the river. Set outside in nice weather. I have always had a great experience there.

  • Ryan W.

I've only gotten the burger and fries, but I've been here several times and think they're the best I've had in south bend. The patio offers a nice view of the river. The parking lot is small and can be a hassle when they get busy. It's also one of the few places I've gone to that knows how to make a proper Long Island iced tea! The service can be bad if they shove you in the basement, but I've never had a problem in the main dining area.

  • Dmytro A.

Food is sub-par and service is lousy. Also, my seating didn't offer a view of anything but the door out. I ordered their monster burger thingy, fries on the side, and a water with no ice. First of all, their monster burger thingy is really mostly bread. Secondly, the fries, when they came substantially later, were cold and not crispy. Thirdly, getting refills on my water was a slow and painful task. That water was key because of the two loaves of bread I was eating for burger buns. When I gave up eating because my mouth was so dry my lips were catching on my gums, the server actually made fun of me for not being able to finish the burger. I took the high road and kept my mouth shut, but tipped with a note: Tips are for service.

The Oaken Bucket is a definitely place to enjoy a warm, sunny afternoon/evening. With a deck on the river and plenty of seating, plan on lingering to enjoy the atmosphere, though I would not recommend the indoor seating- there's not much of it and its smokey. Menu includes your standard bar food selections- appetizers are great, as are the burgers (they've got one massive one- looked pretty good from the next table over). I've heard their sandwich specials are also good. The beer selection's not great- few choices and there are decent prices on domestics, but higher end/foreign beers were a little pricey. ($11 for a pitcher of Smithwick's.) As its a distance from the Notre Dame campus, the crowd tends to be pretty solid local/non student.

Just waited 2.5 hours for my food. Another person at my table got theirs an hour before the rest. Then the fish was a little sub long john silvers. Never come here. As I left with my food in a to go box, the cooks were outside smoking. Is 0 stars possible if you don't even eat your food at the restaurant?

  • Michael R.

I often frequent this establishment during the summer, and love the view of the river from the outdoor deck. I don't love the service that I get, especially around lunch time, when they get slammed, but I love the burgers. They are always among the best in the area. It's a great place to go on warm and sunny summer days, when you can relax with friends or family on the deck and kick back a few cold ones. Don't go if you have a particularly refined taste or don't like burgers.

  • Jared D.

You can't beat the view outside. Good food, cheap beer, great place

  • John S.

If this is the place I'm thinking of, it's kind of a bar-and-grill kind of place rather than a fast-food place. If it's not the place I'm thinking of, please let me know, and I'll change my review. I've only been here once, but I had a good time. It's got a very woodsy feel inside, as in lots of wood paneling and wooden booths, not foresty. The food was decent as I remember it, and while it could get loud, it wasn't *that* loud.

  • Collin M.

This is really a great place in the spring or summer when the weather turns nice and you can enjoy a meal on the deck overlooking the river. I have only had the burgers but they are enormous, juicy, and quite flavorful while being moderately priced for their size and quality. Beer specials are also great here and it is a place I strongly recommend for a nice lunch or a dinner with a bunch of friends.

  • Mary G.

I love the character of this place and the hangout feel. The beer selection is pretty good, though I'm not the kind of person who needs 50 different beer options to be happy. I LOVE their soups! I've had the cream of mushroom and chicken with rice and loved both. I like how you have the option of getting your Cod fried or grilled. I always get the grilled fish with fries. The dill and seasoning on the fish is perfect. It doesn't need any tartar sauce. I love how they have Mama Selita's ketchup! Mmmm!

  • David L.

I highly recommend the hamburgers! Best I've had in a long time. And a week later, my son is still saying that it is the best hamburger he has every had. Hand-made patties and cheese sauce---yum! He gives the lemonade an A+ too! It's a friendly place with a smokey bar upstairs and a nice little family place downstairs (go around on the left and down the stairs outside to access the family, smoke-free place if you want to avoid the bar. It has a nice deck overlooking the river where you can sit and drink outside too.

    (4)
  • Em J.

Yup, Jon S. it is the place. I like the Oaken Bucket, not necessarily because of the bucket itself, but just because of the friends I used to drink there with.

The Oaken Bucket is a great little restaurant/bar that has become a legend in South Bend for great burgers and great times. Their food selection rivals any normal bar menu, however the prices are often much lower. During the warmer months the dining area extends outdoors to a 2 level deck (with a boat dock) and Tiki bar where customers can sit and enjoy the scenery along the St. Joseph River. (Sitting on the lower deck will mean you have to serve yourself when your food order is up however.) Everyday dollar drafts and everyday drink specials make it a great place for adults to meet up and make new friends. However, kids will find the view of the river and kids menu attractive meets their qualifications of a great restaurant as well. Overall one of the best places to eat in South Bend, and not a bad place to grab drinks with friends either!

Hensell's Oaken Bucket is a uniquely local place, it looks like a hunting lodge turned into a bar. To say that the exterior is modest is an understatement, and the interior is not gonna win any design award either, at least not in the 21st century. Let me put it this way: I drove past it for _years_ before I mustered enough curiosity to visit this uninviting brown-painted wooden structure. The place has that country 80's feel, not because a swanky designer spent a lot of effort in going retro, but more likely because it hasn't been renovated since that decade. People used to Starbucks smart hip style is gonna be turned off by the place, but I find it a bit endearing, probably because I'm old enough to remember the 80's and I have an outdoorsy streak. During summer this is one of the few places in town with a decent outdoor seating by the river. The food is the typical American pub-restaurant fare, from the 80's, complete with self-serve soup and salad bar, I kid you not. Its claim to fame is the humongous king burger that's large enough to cover an entire plate, and it actually tastes ok. My personal favorite is their 10 oz ribeye, which is quite juicy and tasty for a $11.99 meal. If you check the price of ribeye steaks in other restaurants you'll realize that Oaken Bucket's prices are also a bit retro, and that's a good thing to compensate for the inadvertently retro ambiance. The service has been ok most of the time. It's not particularly great, but not terrible either. I'd say on par with other restaurants of similar price range. Look, if you come here expecting a copy of TGI Friday's (or any other national chain restaurant), you'll be sad. If you picture an old local watering hole that it is and adjust your expectation accordingly, then you'll do ok. All in all the place offers a good value for your money, and it's local. Since I haven't experienced anything particularly negative about it, I feel it deserves four stars.

Enjoyed the atmosphere and food...but the missing bacon on our 1lb burger made us sad. All in all a good spot, with a great location on the river. It was a little chilly for a summer day in South Bend (we sat on there swanky outdoor deck), but our uber burger made up for it. They have a 1lb burger that is served on an 8" bun. Think 4 McDonald's quarter pounders without the gross after feeling. My husband and I split the burger. I think he felt like he would have to come back one day and do it all himself. I don't mind. I'll come back, but next time please remember our bacon.

This joint has fantastic Angus burgers with all kinds of options for toppings, try the 1 lb(19 ounces prior to being cooked) King Burger it's enough food for 2-3 people. Cheap beer. They serve many fried delights like their signature Irish Nachos(waffle fries covered in nacho cheese sauce and topped with ranch drizzle bacon and green onions). They get creative with their mixed drinks, many of the tropical variety. The deck and Tiki Bar are amazing! Had our wedding reception after party at the Tiki Bar and had a freaking blast.

Avoid the food! I was a regular at The Bucket until recently. One night I ordered the mozzarella sticks. They were hollow inside. The waitress offered to have them re-done. The new sticks looked good, but my friend and I were both sick after eating them.

Good neighborhood hangout but our waitress was so ruuuuuuuude! Act like you wanna work here.

  • Melody F.

The atmosphere is of a sad place that sad people go to be sad. The food is nothing special, but you won't be poisoned either I suppose. I heard it was really good, but the next time my husband suggests going there, I'll be suggesting something else.

This place is average. Nice place to walk to from the IUSB campus. The burgers are pretty good and the fries. Good college joint to meet up with classmates and have a quick bite.

  • John N.

Really good bar food. Had the giant burger which was two meals, even for a big fat guy. Service was super friendly in upstairs bar area. We did not know about river view seating until we were on our way out, but still no complaints.

  • Alison A.

Burgers and appetizers are solid here. The one thing that will keep people away is the bad service. We had a table of 9 and had to wait 20 minutes to place our order. After 20 minutes of additional waiting, the server appeared telling one of the patrons that the item they ordered had "not come in". The patron decided to leave due to a work commitment after only having a drink. The server calls out, who is going to pay for his drink? They didn't offer to comp anything, bring any chips/salsa after our table had to wait over 40 minutes for food.

Buffalo chicken wrap is delish. Cheap food and beer. The best part is sitting on the deck!

I really thoroughly enjoyed this place. They do have a neat little business here. It felt great sitting outside along the river, with the waterfall as a relaxing background noise. The prices were totally affordable and the hamburger I had was nice and juicy. My hamburger was $7.99, plus I ordered a small side of fries for $1.99 (the portion of fries was generous--if you don't want fries, all hamburger orders come with chips). Other hamburgers and sandwiches were $5.99. They also had fish, chicken, and steak entrees under $11.00, I believe. We even had the jalapeno popper appetizer ($5.99), which was great. Anyway, I appreciated the fact that the hamburger meat was real meat, and not some disgusting frozen patty. Students get a $1.00 discount, so bring your I.D.! According to information on the back of the menu, I read that they have a boat dock and a pontoon you can rent from them. Pretty cool. I will recommend this place to family and friends.
